Green Summary
-
Energy savings
of 50-70% when compared to comparable stud framed
structures
-
Substantial compliance with Energy Star rating criteria;
provisions in the Federal Energy Policy Act of 2005
allow home builders to claim a tax credit of $2000 for
qualifying energy-efficient homes completed after
December of 2005. The qualification criterion is based
upon the estimated heating and cooling energy
consumption of the home; energy usage must be at least
50% below the heating and cooling consumption of a
comparable home built to the standards of the 2004
supplement to the 2003 International Energy Conservation
Code (IECC). To claim the tax credit, a builder must
have the home’s energy performance estimated and
certified by an independent certifier that is accredited
by the Residential Energy Service Network (RESNET).
-
SIP’s materials
are 100% recyclable
-
Expanded
Polystyrene, or EPS, contains no CFC's, HCFC's, HFC's,
or formaldehyde; it is an inert, non-nutritive and
highly stable compound and that does not decompose,
decay, or produce undesirable gases or leachates.
-
Oriented Strand
Board is manufactured from sustainable, fast-growing
trees such as aspen poplar, southern yellow pine, mixed
hardwoods, and other suitable species. The manufacturing
process utilizes nearly 90% of the plant mass, with the
balance used to supply energy to the manufacturing
process. OSB is also formaldehyde free.
-
Reduces demand
for old growth lumber
-
Reduced air
leakage, dust and pollen infiltration; test results show
that a SIP’s wall allows roughly 5 times less air
leakage than a stud framed wall, providing superior air
quality in the home environment.
-
Reduction in
building waste.
