SIP’s Homes
vs. Modular Homes
It is important to remember
that SIP’s home are very different structures
altogether than modular homes. Modular homes are
factory built, eliminating weather as a variable,
and can be built quickly, as on-site foundation
work can be staged concurrently with factory
assembly. Some of the disadvantages of a modular
home are size limitations resulting from roadway
load width constraints; the maximum width of a
module is 11 feet. Transportation costs can also
be very expensive as multiple trucks will be
required to transport the various modules to
location. Also, the structural integrity of
modules can be compromised during transportation
if subjected to rough roads. Other drawbacks
associated with modular homes include poor resale
value relative to comparable homes of other
construction types (due to a variety of stigmas
modular homes have acquired over the years),
difficulty of subsequent modification and the
availability of limited finishing options in the
factory packages.
The benefits of a SIP’s home
over a modular home are many. SIP’s panels are
custom built in the factory specifically for a
given project and can be configured to meet
virtually any design specifications. In fact, the
design flexibility of panels has resulted in their
frequent use in many projects requiring large open
spans and/or cathedral ceilings, such as luxury
homes. And since home modules employ stud framing,
SIP’s homes provide substantial energy savings,
superior performance under extreme weather
conditions and a wide range of other benefits
relative to modular homes. |
